VEP Tag Installation: 5cm Rule & Windscreen Positioning Guide

Proper placement ensures smooth scanning at Malaysian checkpoints

Why Proper VEP Tag Placement Matters

If your tag doesn't scan properly at Malaysian checkpoints, it can cause delays or even lead to fines. That's why there are official guidelines for where and how to place it.

What Is the 5cm Rule?

When installing your VEP tag, it must be at least 5cm away from any metal parts — like the rearview mirror mount, windscreen frame, or dashboard devices. This prevents signal interference.

Correct Installation Position

  • Top of Windscreen: Behind or near your rearview mirror, in the clear zone
  • 5cm from Metal: Use a ruler to measure the gap from nearby metal or electronics
  • Avoid Metallic Tints: If your windscreen has metallic tint, choose a spot without it
  • Clear Line of Sight: Ensure nothing blocks the tag — no hanging decorations or sun visors in front

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

  1. Clean the Windshield where you'll place the tag
  2. Measure 5cm from metal or electronic devices
  3. Peel the backing off the tag's adhesive
  4. Press firmly on the marked spot for at least 30 seconds
  5. Test at a checkpoint before your trip to ensure proper function

Common Installation Mistakes

  • Placing the tag too close to the mirror mount
  • Installing on a tinted section of the glass
  • Positioning too low on the windscreen
  • Not cleaning the surface properly before application
