Difference Between VEP and Touch ‘n Go RFID – Do You Need Both?
Confused about the two RFID tags for driving in Malaysia? MyMechanic explains the differences, when you need each, and why both are essential for Singapore drivers.
What’s the Confusion Between VEP and Touch 'n Go RFID?
If you're a Singaporean (or other foreign) driver entering Malaysia, you've likely encountered both VEP RFID and Touch 'n Go (TNG) RFID. While both use RFID technology, they serve distinct roles:
VEP RFID – issued by JPJ Malaysia for border entry and vehicle control.
TNG RFID – issued by Touch ‘n Go for cashless toll and selected payments.

Summary: VEP RFID is for crossing the border. Touch 'n Go RFID is for toll (and other) payments in Malaysia. Both are often essential for Singapore-registered cars.
What Happens If You Only Have One?
VEP RFID only: You can enter Malaysia, but can't use RFID toll lanes (need TNG RFID for cashless tolls).
Touch ‘n Go RFID only: You can't enter Malaysia, as JPJ requires VEP registration first.
Bottom line: The tags are complementary, not interchangeable.
