5 Common VEP RFID Mistakes Singapore Drivers Make (And How to Avoid Them)

A failed scan at the gantry is frustrating but often avoidable. Learn from these common errors.

You’ve waited in the queue, you pull up to the gantry, and... nothing happens. The barrier doesn't lift. A failed RFID scan is a top frustration for Singapore drivers, causing delays and stress. The good news is that it's rarely a random event.

This is the number one culprit. Placing the tag behind a heavily tinted part of your windscreen, too close to the metal frame, or near other electronic devices (like your cashcard reader) can block the signal.

The RFID tag is just a sticker until it’s linked to a payment source. Many drivers get the tag installed but forget to complete the final step: linking it to a funded Touch 'n Go eWallet. Without this link, the system can't process your road charge, and the barrier won't open.

Some drivers, confused by the system, buy and install a separate TNG RFID tag in addition to their VEP RFID tag. This is a critical error. Having two tags on your car creates signal interference, confusing the scanner and leading to a failed read. Remember: your VEP RFID is your all-in-one tag.

The RFID chip is sensitive. A deep scratch, a peel, or even a very dirty windscreen over the tag can interfere with the signal. Always protect the tag area and keep your windscreen clean.

The RFID tag is the final piece of the puzzle, not the first. The tag will not work if your underlying VEP application has not been officially approved by JPJ or if your insurance/road tax information is outdated. The system checks your VEP status in real-time when the tag is scanned.
